Porfirio Valadares, graduated with a degree in architecture and has accomplished a consistent production of furniture for over twenty years. Porfirio is established in the design market with pieces of large formal elegance. His work has twice been a finalist for the ‘Museu da Casa Brasileira’ Prize, and won in 1994. He was awarded the Top XXI Market Design in 2007.

He mostly works in wood, his preferred material, with mastery. His work highlights the broad knowledge and mastery of the raw material used, as well as the formal possibilities and shapes it allows. The Alvaro chaise illustrates Porfirio’s work. The inventive construction solution dispenses artifices that mask the skeleton of the piece. The curves that characterizes the chaise resolve all its parts: seat, back and base of support. The beautiful organic result is a consequence of the architect’s ability to work considering form, function and construction techniques.

Having dropped out of the engineering university, following the dream of becoming an artist, Archela spent about six years as a professional musician, playing guitar and singing in a jazz nightclub.

The artistic lifestyle in counterpoint with the logical thought learned at the engineering school and the process of combining different ideas, influences and techniques are the synthesis of Archela’s design. Cartier, Chanel, Clinique and Louis Vuitton are among his clients.

Sergio Fahrer, a furniture designer graduated at MIT in Los Angeles, uses only raw FSC certified and applies various techniques researched and developed by him such as multi layer MDF.

Fahrer was guest designer at the Milan Fair 2005 and has his pieces exhibited in Germany, France, London, San Francisco, NewYork (USA), Argentina (South America)

“Man and nature. The social and ecological responsibility should be a designer’s concern.”

This is how Sergio Fahrer does his job. If the wood is his main raw material, work and inspiration, it must continue to exist. Also people who work with him, those that provide the wood or build the furniture should have a better life. Fahrer believes that is essential that people can recognize themselves in their work, what comes out of their hands what they believe may contain in their lives.

It is with this idea that he supports and uses certified wood from sustainably managed. His work has the FSC label which identifies the appropriate raw material extraction process, environmentally friendly transportation and processing. He also believes that sustainable management is an alternative for Brazil, but also brings the unity of people and productive communities, which increases family income and makes these little group of people stronger.

Mixture of materials. New materials. Technical challenges. Curved lines. Bent wood. Ergonomics.

Pedro Petry is an artist and designer, under graduated in Administration, and is a specialist in wood turning. Owns his own factory located in Itu, State of Sao Paulo and the beauty of his objects and furniture represent an example of care with nature and its sources.

From sustainably developed forests Pedro Petry has developed research for the utilization of alternative species, in order to ease the pressure on those species traditionally used, some of them, in fact, on the brink of extinction. Objects and furniture are therefore made instead with residues, with the aim of making concepts and standards more adaptable, thereby establishing a new parameter for the use of natural resources.

Under the investigative eye of this eco-designer, pieces that are usually only seen fit to use as firewood become beautiful objects of art. The peculiarity of each piece inspires its function and design. his work goes beyond just creativity; he is driven by strong principles and a love for his country and its natural resources. he aims to decorate homes with a multiple of different textures, colours and aromas, leaving out the smells of ecological disequilibrium.

Born in 1961, lives and works in Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil.

With a degree in Industrial Design, he worked in fashion and developed his line of jewelry. He always felt the call of the Arts. With a beautiful ‘stroke’ and a refined drawing technique, he was attracted by forms. “Threedimensionality always fascinated me”.

In the 1990s, he met and developed a friendship with the sculptor Sonia Ebling, who encouraged him and cast his first sculpture. Since that time, he has not stopped sculpting. His observation of nature and his passion for the large felines resulted in his developing, among other sculptures, the “large Felines” series, exhibited at the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes (National Museum of Fine Arts) in Rio Janeiro, in the Bernadelli Room.

Martins has exhibited his work at Everarts Gallery in Paris, France; Silvia Nayla Gallery in London, UK; National Museum of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Salon Du Louvre in Paris; Sidney, Australia; National Theater Gallery in Brasilia, Brazil; Anne Plumb Gallery in New York.

The Polish born Jorge Zalszupin moved to Brazil after World War II, where he found an opportunity to develop his extremely sensual, modern architecture. A desire to rebuild a new post-war world and a wave of development in Brazil proved an ideal time for this creative atmosphere to flourish. Graceful lines, strong use of local woods and a combination of impeccable woodworking and classical detailing mark Zalszupin’s furniture.

Zalzsupin was one of the founders of the brand L’Atelier, a design collective comprised of architects, engineers, craftsmen and a full-scale team of professionals that did everything from researching materials to the finalizing the product. With the birth of the utopic Brasilia during the 1960’s and 1970’s, virtually no public building was left unmarked by the brand’s creations. L’Atelier’s designs stand as benchmarks of modernism to this day. (www.espasso.com)
