Occasional Chairs by Zanine Caldas – 1960′s
A self-taught Artist, designer and architect, Jose Zanine Caldas (1918 – 2001) was born in Belmonte on the southern coast of Bahia. at age twenty, he moved to Rio and started to work with Architectural scale when he met and worked with some of the architects responsible for bringing Modernismo to Brazil such as Oscar Niemeyer and Lucio Costa. In 1940′s he started the “Z Artistic Furniture” line (Moveis Artisticos Z) and left it in 1952.
A life-long proponent of forest protection, Zanine was one of the first truly ecologically conscious artists; attempted to plant a new tree every time a tree was taken down for one of his projects. He is known as “Master of the Wood” due to his knowledge and passion for solid wood as a material.
The Musée des Arts Decoratifs [Museum of Decorative Arts] in Paris showed his design pieces in 1989, when he receives the Silver Medal of the College of Architects of France. He also had his work shown at the Museu de Arte Moderna of Rio (MAM-RJ)and Museu de Arte of Sao Paulo (MASP).
Zanine died in 2001 and left rich work on furniture, sculpture and architecture projects.
